presentation of the 961 Commando L.E. 'Transatlantic' 2024
Today, Norton has become a small, artisanal manufacturer. But there was a time when its motorcycles were a must in competition, with an extraordinary aura. The Manx epic is legendary, but enthusiasts will also have a special thought for 1973, when the English brand won the Tourist Trophy with a surprising bike - the Formula 750 Works Racer, nicknamed John player (the brand that financed the Norton team at the time for the compèt').
It's this JPN that gives the Norton 961 Commando Limited Edition "Transatlantic" its raison d'être. The color scheme comes straight from the motorcycle racing world: all-white nappage embellished with red and blue stripes. This "flag" floats on the rear hull, as on the inspirer, and on the tank, whereas the graphics used to be on the fairing.
But the Norton 961 Commando doesn't have a fairing, so it's set to fit elsewhere.
But why doesn't it bear the name John Player replica or a derivative? Mmmmm, you just don't mention a cigarette manufacturer. There's a more racing-related reason for the name. In 1973, the 750 JPS won three of the six races in the Transatlantic Trophy, a series of races held over 20 years (from '71 to '91) that pitted American and British drivers against each other.
In addition to its historic color scheme, the 961 Commando "Transatlantic" features a 125th-anniversary badge on the seat cover and a black finish on the engine, footpegs and fork crowns.
Apart from that, you get the original equipment of a 961 Commando Café Racer, with its Öhlins suspension, half-guidelines, Brembo brakes, 77-hp air-cooled twin and no electronics to disturb the sensations.
125 years for Norton, as the number of limited edition motorcycles produced for the occasion. Mind you, not 125 Commando Transatlantic models, but all special series combined. In addition, the series will be built on a first-come, first-served basis.
