presentation of the R 1200 GS Rallye 2012

it feels like the end of life for the R 1200 GS. Ahead of the eagerly-awaited next-generation liquid-block model, BMW is stepping up the number of special series for its famous trail bike, the world's best-selling model in its segment (and others). After the frankly dark Triple Blacks, the Rallye edition is a return to luminosity. The decor is based on that of the first R 80 GS Paris/Dakar, the initiator of the segment. Covered in a very "hunter-alpine" white, the R 1200 GS Rallye sports the BMW Motorsport colors on its flanks. The eye-catching feature is the red frame, monopolizing the eye with a series of small cosmetic details, such as the integrated forkgrant fork, the two-tone seat, the all-chrome exhaust system, the black-painted engine, and the granite-gray cylinder heads and swingarm.

the air-cooled boxer remains, with cylinder heads derived from the HP2 Sport, as does the highly efficient chassis. But a special series means extra equipment. The Rallye offers more than just decoration. For an extra 850 euros (14,950 euros in Germany), you get a trip computer, heated grips, a set of handguards, a luggage rack, ESA Enduro electronic suspension and spoked wheels.

French Model 2012
Bought second-hand with 62,000 km, I've now covered 11,000 km, including 3,600 for a TET trip to Albania, so lots of off-roading. Loaded like a mule, with tent and enough to be autonomous for 15 days... a real treat. That famous telelever combined with powerful braking makes all the difference on twisty roads. And off-road, its balance is divine... you don't feel its 230 kg as much as the 189 kg of the Tenere700 I had before. I would add that I find the sound of the exhaust very pleasant, contrary to the article on this site. The ESA is not a gadget... in hard enduro mode, you clearly feel more at ease off-road. On the other hand, you quickly feel the need to switch back to road mode when you're back on asphalt, as you get the impression of floating... less precise if you stayed in enduro mode. So you have to stop to change the seating position... a matter of 15 seconds. The fuel consumption is a little too high for my taste, at 5.8l/100km, but it gives me a real buzz every time I ride it. After long negotiations, my daughter and my wife gave me the right to buy a GS... Triple black, as they find the rallye a little too flashy!
All the same, I'm very satisfied with this machine, with which I've covered over three thousand kilometers in three weeks. Next Tuesday, I'm off to complete the break-in by riding to Venice via the Dolomites and back via Switzerland from near Besançon, where I live. I've checked the camping gear, so all that's left is to load the suitcases (Vario of course)
Have a good summer,
Prudence and courtesy,
Jean

I've just tried it on. I'm 1.73 m tall, so average height minus, and...I'm thrilled!
You feel very comfortable on this machine, which looks very cheerful for once (low 82 cm seat). I think I'll break my
Little Porcelain Pig and give it to myself for my birthday with all the options and the luggage kit.

Hi everyone, I'd like to know if small people with a max seat height of 82cm can ride this bike and if the fuel tank is interesting for autonomy, just like the one on the adventure.

Thank you in advance for your reply
