Motorcycle specifications BMWK 1600 GTL 2016 The symphony of a ship

Touring

2016 comes with a few bonuses: ABS Pro is included as standard. This improved anti-lock braking system varies braking pressure according to various parameters (cornering, lateral acceleration, angle of rotation). As a result, the more the bike is on an angle, the less the jaws are used, to avoid losing the front end when cornering.
There's also the Control Brake Light, a system that flashes the brake light faster or slower depending on the intensity of emergency braking, with the warning light coming on at the end of the deceleration phase. This way, those behind can assess whether you're braking more or less like a deaf man, and whether things are going badly up ahead.

2015 and its updates. Introduced on the Exclusive version, the Keyless Ride system arrives on the K 1600 GTL (and GT) as an option. Like a car, this system lets you keep the key in your pocket and remotely lock/unlock the fuel tank, suitcases, steering column and ignition. Also available as an option, the GTL can be fitted with Hill Start Control, which facilitates hill starts. Standard equipment includes DTC traction control. Also noteworthy is the slightly revised dashboard, with new calligraphy and inlaid chrome surfaces.

tHE ship for the road. A new dimension in dynamic touring, where comfort and liveliness cannot exist without each other. This symbiosis is the essence of the K 1600 GTL. An ambassador of BMW Grand Touring, with a prestigious engine, an empress-like silhouette and formidable pride.

the pinnacle of the BMW Motorrad range, the K 1600 GTL has replaced the K 1200 GT, shaking up all the codes established by the latter. Gone is the bourgeois GT concept to compete with the Honda Goldwing. The GTL is far more dynamic, less chubby in its lines and handling. In fact, it doesn't really compete with the GL 1800, but rather with the Pan-European and the Gold. The German is much lighter than the Japanese, 50 kilos lighter, and its mill does not play the same part. As Béhème is also a car manufacturer, we could easily draw a comparison with a 550i. Compared to the K 1600 GT, the GTL is more roadworthy, more comfortable, more sedan-like. Protection is better, with a larger-calibre bubble, and the seat is more senatorial, with a lower seat height and lower, forward-mounted footrests.

the big highlight of the new K is, of course, its engine. The in-line 6-cylinder is almost a religion at BMW automobiles, where the various displacements are benchmarks. But in motorcycling, this architecture has equipped very few models in history (Kawasaki Z 1300, Honda CBX 1000, Benelli 750 Sei). And today, only the GL 1800 Goldwing is powered by a 6-legged, opposed flathead. BMW has therefore given itself the means to offer a noble, extremely well-designed motorization. The boiler weighs just 102.6 kilos, and is 56 cm wide (narrower than a gas stove). It develops 160 hp at 7,750 rpm and almost 18 mkg at 5,000 rpm. 70% of this muscle is available from 1,500 rpm, i.e. just above idle. The brand is so proud of its engine that the cowling is cut away to show off the side casings. The mufflers also get a nod, with two triple exhaust outlets.
A must on today's temperamental engines, this GTL features a choice of three injection mapping configurations:
- Rain, with reduced power and smoother engine response
- Road, the right compromise between performance and a greater preference for fuel economy
- Dynamic, where the engine doesn't give a damn about fuel consumption, offering the driver the full force of its velvety cylinder ballet.

BMW K 1600 GTL 2016

just as it has done with its cars, the Bavarian brand applies the same demand for excellence to its new powertrains for two-wheelers. If the S 1000 RR kicked Japanese ass in the sports sector, the K 1600's 6-cylinder engine brings top-quality vigor to the touring segment. But it's not just the mechanics that add value. Whether standard or optional, the K 1600 will be controlled by a small army of electronic chips. Injection mapping, ABS, traction control, ESA (automatic suspension adjustment), cruise control, tire pressure indicator, and a particularly interesting new feature, lighting that adapts to the road profile. The video below explains better than a speech how it works. Basically, xenon lighting corrects itself according to the motorcycle's movements, allowing you to light up the road once you've turned the corner, whereas traditional lighting tends to light up the roadside and the rabbits wandering around the fields. A nod to production harmonization: the nightlights are now circles of light around the headlights, as on the German manufacturer's cars.

just as technologically advanced, the chassis relies on solutions developed by and for BMW, especially in the area of suspension. Already present on the K 1300 (since the K 1200 S, in fact), the front axle consists of the famous Duolever double wishbone, backed up (as an option) by ESA 2 and a pair of 4-piston brake calipers. As attached to a BM tourer as a slider is to its combarde, the Paralever is still part of the equation, combining the elegance of a single-arm with a cardan drive, articulated to get rid of torque effects. These elements are joined by an all-new aluminum frame. Its perimeter-structured longitudinal members spread out at gearbox level to pass over the engine's cylinder head, which is itself inclined 55° to the front.

mechanically superb, technologically appealing, the K 1600 GTL must also be a top-flight cruiser. And cruising is its thing. It comes standard with two side cases, a large top case that doubles as a passenger backrest, 27.5 liters of fuel (the Kservoir of the K 1600 GT is smaller), sound system, heated grips and saddle, cruise control, on-board computer, and a control station reminiscent of a Bavarian sedan. A 5.7-inch TFT screen sits between the traditional needle-type meters, allowing you to control all the bike's functions. Between the dials and the electrically adjustable bubble, you'll find a slot for the in-house GPS, turning your dashboard into a real Airbus cockpit.

this K 1600 GTL completes the rejuvenation of BMW's image. Before, the brand's touring cars were cushy, comfortable machines, but they didn't really thrill. Now, BMW's Grand Tourisme will become a benchmark of dynamism and prestige. Its engine is the only in-line 6-cylinder on the market, its technology makes it a shock cruiser, and its skills seem clearly a notch above, even if fans of senatorial comfort will find it a hair too sporty. Today, BMW leads the way.

French Fred Model 2011
It's a great bike. I had a Gex 1000, a Hayabusa, a 1900 yamaha XV, I was looking for a 'compromise' between touring and adventure, I live in Japan and I tripe in the small mountain roads with it, the engine is fabulous, it rips at the bottom on the torque, at the top it's a symphony! The chassis is top-notch, the brakes are top-notch, and it's peaceful at 40 km/h. For me, there's nothing to complain about, maybe the seat's a bit soft, but after 25,000 km, I think that's normal. On the other hand, don't forget the weight, when stopping and maneuvering, you need legs! I love this bike! Rating : 5/5

Hello I also own a k1600gtl, from 2012 with 50000 km. I've been riding it for 2 years. I almost only go out in the summer. But what happiness this 6 cylinders. Concerning the weight, you have to be careful when stopping and at slow speeds, otherwise it's a jewel. Pickups at 1000 rpm in 6th gear, a crazy trunk. Rating : 5/5

Now that I'm on my 2nd k1600 gtl, I've yet to find a bike that combines power with comfort and roadholding. It's a bike that suits me to a tee - you can combine a leisurely ride (40km/h in 6th gear) with the ability to take off on the throttle without rattling, or you can pull out all the stops (extraordinary roadholding). And then there's the comfort, as I ride a lot with two people (trips to Andalusia - Croatia - Montenegro, etc.). No other motorcycle comes close, apart from the Gold and the old K1200lt. Rating : 5/5
Hi everyone
I have just acquired my little toy
K16 de 2011 57000kms suivi chez bm.je vais au taf avec et au démarrage un claquement moteur et un peu de fumée du pot d'échappement apparaît et dur 5,6
Seconds and the noise stops
Should I be worried?
I've just taken the bike away and it's not noisy

engine oil that's too cold and doesn't do its job, and once it's hot, no more worries. What do you think?

Hello everyone,
i would like to know the average oil consumption per 1000 km of a 1600 GT. I consume about 300 ml per 1000km, is this normal? I also own a 1000 gtr with 110,000 km which consumes almost nothing.
Could you please give me some information.
A bientôt et marci d\'avance.

I had the k1200lt and now I have the k1600 gtl
It's true that there's no reverse gear, but it's lighter to handle, and the big differences are power and weight. On the other hand, I find that the engine revs faster on the k1600 (odd for a 6 cyl)
It's much sportier to ride.

Hello everyone I own an exclusive GTL and I have a problem with the central locking system. Let me explain when I bought the bike, as soon as I was more than 2 m away, everything locked automatically if I faced anything, then it broke down and only works manually. My dealer tells me it doesn't work that way. The problem is that I don't have any proof that it works automatically, so I'm looking for someone who has the same bike and can validate how it works. What's more, all the articles in the press indicate that the top case and panniers lock automatically Rating : 4/5

I've got my 3rd Goldwing 1800, and I ride it every day, and with Madame on weekends. I tried out a k1600 GTL (1/2 hour): the whistling makes a huge noise, whereas the GT doesn't -> ? . The bubble doesn't provide enough protection, and the rear brake pedal kicks when used with the front. I don't see any of this in your comments? Has anyone tried akra pots and wider, higher bubbles? For me, this bike is the most extraordinary of all. Up until now, I've owned 1200 RTs that I thought were great, but this is sublime. This engine is absolutely fabulous, and what balance, what willingness to investigate corners!
To answer pat_ice, the whistling is linked to the engine architecture, which is different from the flat 6. At first it bothered me, but now I don't worry about it. As for the rear brake, that's normal too: the handle acts on both, so you don't need to use the pedal if you're using the handle. As a result, if you press a little too hard, you trigger the ABS at the rear, hence the jerking.

I was lucky enough to be able to save up for 3 years to buy a new bmw, I ordered an r1200rt lc the bike had a big delivery delay my dealer lent me a brand new K1600gtl while I waited, everything started on the winding roads of drome provençale, gorge du Vercors, luggage and madam behind, the bike turned out to be very maneuverable in the hairpins, the comfort was great, and the ultimate was the engine, which took over without any mechanical jerks in third gear at 1200 rpm. I didn't want to give her back, so I negotiated, and here I am, the owner of a K16, the only drawback being its weight when stationary, which is great because I can put both feet on the ground, which is reassuring. for those who can try it, don't hesitate because of the weight, it's a great bike Rating : 5/5

I've been riding for 41 years, and I think I've owned about 15 becanes
my last ones were honda pan and yam fjr
i've had the GT1600 for 1 month now, and I have to say that when it comes to perfection, we've reached the top; fuel consumption 4l6, in constant gear, a delight to drive, and electronic perfection of course, with a little clattering on the gearbox like the other bikes...
it's really only the price that makes you hesitate...

the pan honda; 110000kms at 130 it takes up the whole road a fiesco for a bike of this price
the same goes for the FJR, whose suitcases are add-ons; it's written inside not to exceed 130, but in fact you need 145 to take up the whole road, and it eats up 6 to 7 liters if you're reasonable

I've always had new motorcycles. I owned a Gold that I kept for two years, fuel consumption almost 10L/100. Then I had two Pan... My last one was a 1300 that I sold at 270,000kms with no mechanical problems. Fuel consumption 7L/100.
I now have a BMW K1600 GT with 28,000kms in 1 year. Superb handling, reasonable fuel consumption: 5.8L/100.
Black points:
- request for engine reprogramming (which was billed to me), as it was knocking both on acceleration and throttle cut-off, with the rear tire stalling
- The starter no longer started the engine... change of starter wheel under warranty
- cruise control no longer worked. Left-hand cooker replaced under warranty
- now consuming 1.5L of engine oil every 5000kms... that's a lot.
BMW service is horrible. They always look down on us like we're losers.
The bike doesn't handle well and the comfort is just right.
This is my first BMW, but I think I'll go back to Honda and their PAN, which is less technical but much more accomplished.
P.S: since I bought this bike, BMW has withdrawn the Motorrad sign from my dealer, whom I had chosen for his seriousness.

Since March 2013, I've clocked up 10,000km on my k1600gtl, which is very pleasant to ride, both in urban areas and on twisty roads, and very maneuverable, with good engine braking, which means less brake use. A little less comfortable than the Goldwing over long distances (100,000km with an 18,000) Rating : 5/5
French Papylou Model 2012
A career in Japanese, the last a Yam FJR 1300 that I regret to have left!
The K1600GTL is more at the dealership than on the road... problem initializing the keys, replacement of the control units, start of the problem September 2012, solution May 2013! Currently stuck at the dealership again (for 3 weeks), won't start when it's in the sun... comodos problem (known on several models of the brand) but no parts in stock and no announced delay. BMW doesn't care about its customers, and lives up to a reputation it doesn't deserve. Other areas of dissatisfaction: transmission noise, clattering gearbox, no reverse gear, no electric stand. But pullman comfort, flexibility and engine power without reproach. Conclusion: Too much on-board technology, poorly mastered by the brand, the technical department unresponsive to problems, unacceptable for such a high-priced vehicle. This will be my only BMW

What disappointments!!! Ordered an additional key in September 2012, unable to initialize it, returned it to the importer, after much research it turns out that a certain series of motorcycles refuses initialization, 2 management units had to be replaced, at BMW's expense since the motorcycle was still under warranty, the problem was solved in May 2013!!!! A few days ago, during a ride, I couldn't start it after stopping in direct sunlight... call the dealer, ah yes, comodo problems, put it in the shade and wait for it to cool down...I was able to restart it and drop it off at BMW, who told me they'd ordered the parts after my phone call. I got back in touch, only to be told that a catch-up operation was under way, but there were already no parts available, so I had to wait for BO and no date of availability. I've had a long motorcycling career with Japanese bikes, with which I've never had the slightest problem, and they didn't cost the price of the K1600GTL, which, in addition to the problems mentioned, has a transmission noise that gives you the creeps... but that's normal according to BM. This brand lives on a reputation it no longer deserves and a mediocre after-sales service. I regret having to part with my FJR 1300! Rating : 1/5

Just the sound of the engine makes my libido tingle;-), it has to be said that when Honda produced its six-cylinder cbx in 1978, already 35 years old, I had a flash, I've had it since last October to be precise, and it's been nothing but bliss, first of all the comfort I'd give eight out of ten. Fuel consumption 5.8 liters per cent, still a six-cylinder: nine out of ten. Handling: eight out of ten.
Two criticisms that join the other comments: the clatter of the gearbox and the jerks of the transmission. A transmission damper would have been welcome.
When the evening comes and I have to choose between Vivaldi's Four Seasons and the six-cylinder of my Bmmm, my choice is made......

51-year-old motorcyclist for 33 years, cool riding, doing between 20 and 25,000 km a year, having had 9 Japanese motorcycles of all 4 makes, and satisfied to have taken them all over 100,000 km.At 50, I've decided to change; I've owned this bike for a year now, with 22,000km on the clock, already changed the rear brake pads, left-hand comodo (no indicators) under warranty, changed the steering ball joints under warranty... what's in store for me in the coming months, and what's more, if there's no longer a warranty?
i'm disappointed for a vehicle of this make and with a price of 25,000 euros, all options included.
Bonne route à tous

After 20,000 km in 18 months, this bike meets all the expected criteria. If we don't take into account the cost of ownership, which is 2 times higher than the cost of my previous 2 1200 RTs, it's a dream. Remaining objective, the two main shortcomings are the transmission noise, mainly in dynamic mode, and the riding position, which is too low for my taste (for 1.80m), even with the seat up. I had it raised by 5 cm, and the riding position is much more comfortable and maneuverable. I wish I'd had the GT's footpegs, as mine are already well worn. Rating : 4/5

For the past 8 months, I've been riding a 1600 gt I bought new with all options.
This bike could be a very good machine, but the clatter and play in the transition are unbearable.
In 35 years of motorcycling, I've owned a dozen machines, and I've never encountered such annoyances.
BMW considers that the problem is (conceptual) therefore normal and that no modifications are planned.

French Pascal5656 Model 2012
I've been riding this marvel for 10 months now, because, let's face it, it's a jewel of technology that's great fun to ride. I do have a few regrets, though: the lack of an electric reverse gear for a 350kg machine would have been nice for the old guys, and an electric stand for the same reasons. At this price level and product range, BMW could have made an effort. I agree with some of the opinions expressed about the clattering of the gearbox, especially at low revs and in town, where the elegance of the beast makes you stand out, but also because of these not very pleasant noises. For the rest, there's nothing to throw away. It's a pleasure to ride, and very comfortable for the passenger. Rating : 4/5

Former owner of a Yam. FJR1300 I allowed myself to be seduced by BMW's flagship, satisfied with my choice but with certain reservations about the transmission, a concert of "empty cans" at every stop and go, unworthy of the brand! The dealer assures me of reliability, but says there's nothing he can do. What's more, why didn't they fit the K1200LT's power-assisted center stand and M.AR?
4-star comfort, TOP handling and performance.

I've owned the k 1600 Gtl since April 2012, and it's clocked up just over 20,000 km. it's really a great tourer with sporty features, despite its 350 kg. reverse gear would have been welcome, given its weight, because in town it's a bit heavy in traffic jams and when manoeuvring. On the other hand, thanks to its torquey 6-cylinder engine, it's a queen on roads and freeways.

After more than 800,000km with 6 Pan Europeans, it's just the choice of the old biker who's enjoying himself. Superb to drive, with excellent roadholding, it saves me from taking the Goldwin, which is too massive, too veal, too greedy and too expensive to maintain. Rating : 4/5

I've been lucky enough to own this beast since December 2012. After 10,000km, still the same pleasure and no faults.
It replaced a K 1200GTL. Too bad no more electric stand or reverse gear. But it's much easier to handle.
One regret: it's impossible to know when the rear armrests will be available. According to BMW France's customer relations department, a part is missing for the assembly kit, but that shouldn't be long now. Well, it's already been over a month since I received this reply ....

- happy with comfort, audio system not great
- disappointed with the wind protection, your hands and feet get cold very quickly, and the rest too
- very disappointed with the dealer, very nice to sell, then takes you for a fool as soon as you go back to the garage. \'m'even charged for the 1000km check-up, I couldn't believe it for a machine of this price

After a GTS, an FJR, and a Goldwing 1800 that I kept for a year, a test ride of this marvel was more than enough to convince me! As much as I was disappointed with the Gold, too heavy and not at all in tune with my riding style, I find this BM squares the circle, if only!a great riding position for my old bones, exemplary road-holding, remarkable lightness when riding (it's more agile than the FJR, when you need power it's there, even on the freeway - what happiness!), my wife, whose opinion I feared after the gold, considers it more comfortable - what happiness! on the downside: the electronic acceleration system takes some getting used to, with frequent stalling on start-up and occasional hiccups on engine braking when it jerks, the computer is not very easy to understand, especially the radio section, and the operating instructions are not always very explanatory, the height of the passenger seat means that the passenger has to do gymnastics to climb onto the camel(!), and when you stop, you can really regret the reverse gear. As for me, I find that maneuvering is quite easy, as much as with the Fjr, but I'm a big boy. I'm making this comment having just come from a 3000km trip in the Alps, with a lot of passes, and not all of them great roads! Rating : 5/5

As the owner of a K1300S, I wanted to try out BMW's latest marvel.
Great satisfaction in terms of handling (it's a moped) and of course in terms of comfort (rider and passenger), there's no contest.
However, the engine power is a big disappointment (the model we tried out was 106 HP, the model available in France), and we can feel that this machine is lacking. I was also disappointed by the transmission, which clatters a lot.
I'd considered upgrading to this model, but I think I'll go back to a 1300 or wait a bit for improvements. BMW did a good job between the 1200 S and 1300 S models, so why not in the 1600 range?
To sum up, a satisfactory test drive, but nothing more.

It's a shame there's no reverse gear, as my 80kg weight means I tire quickly when it comes to parking, and it's almost impossible for me to park with a passenger in the back. As for the radio, I'm frankly disappointed. Otherwise, it's a marvel. Rating : 4/5

hello,
i had the opportunity to try it out for a weekend and frankly, it didn't take 10 km to be seduced by this marvel!
it's true that it's a bit scary at first because it's so imposing, but once you're on it, you feel like you're riding a moped, so easy to handle and drive. The only thing you can say against it is its price: 23,000 euros is quite a budget, but it's worth it! BRAVO à bmw d\' avoir sorti se salon a 2 roues...

My bike is only 1 month old and 1500km, the radio is a catastrophe, at 100kh you can't hear a thing, I'm not telling you at 130 on the freeway it's not worth it... an option costing several hundred euros for nothing, and let's not talk about the BMW headsets with bluetooth kit offered by BMW, which are also not great at all, except for the phone where it's perfect and a passenger, again a very expensive option...
And the big problem is transmission noise, which really hurts me because I feel like I'm losing something, and then in town when following cars it's a horror, even pedestrians turn their heads.
And now when I pass 1st gear, what a noise I hear, I feel like the gearbox is going to fall on the floor, I really miss my Pan 1300.
i have a strong urge to return the keys and helmets to my dealer, and go back to Honda.
What a disappointment for my 1st European motorcycle.

it's true that the presentation of the K1600 may have disconcerted 1200LT owners who were expecting a big GT with integrated luggage, but the orientation of a lighter, easier-to-handle bike will bring back current k1300 and r1200rt owners like me, who weren't keen on a machine that was too imposing.
