There's no need to sing the praises of the BMW S 1000 RR. A super-powered sports machine with a fearsome temperament, it's one of the most mind-blowing machines ever produced. And it's about to enter a new stage in its evolution. It's a breathtaking feat usually reserved for exceptional Italian machines. With this HP4 Race, Bayerische Motoren Werke makes abundant use of carbon to turn it into a high-velocity missile.
One idea sums it all up: the frame is made of carbon fiber. It's quiet. Only the Bimota DB8 Oronero and Ducati 1299 Superleggera offer this kind of refinement in series production. The tone changes with the German, as this is the first time a double-spar perimeter frame has been built in this material. The result is far superior lightness and rigidity. To save even more weight, the rims are also made of carbon. We've heard talk of 160 kilos on the scales. Maybe less. The bodywork is also made entirely from this high-end material.
This concept says very little technically, just to shake up the Superleggera a little and whet appetites. But it won't stay that way. BMW has announced a small HP4 Race series for the second half of 2017, hand-built and equipped with the essentials of the S 1000 RR. Its copious 200hp (minimum) 4-cylinder, cutting-edge electronics and thirst for performance will all be part of the package. This proto features a superb Öhlins FGR pressurized inverted fork. A product designed for competition, which we're unlikely to find on the upcoming limited series. The Akrapovic exhaust system may be carried over. As for the on-board equipment, there's no chance of enjoying it. With its sensors, 2D cockpit, controls and lack of road hardware, the HP4 Race prototype has shamelessly taken its cues from a WSBK machine.
BMW isn't the kind of company to make announcements like this just to show off. The HP4 Race limited series is set to deliver a level of sporting luxury rarely seen before.
