presentation of the Concept R18 2019
BMW is slowly building up the tension around its future Boxer engine. This R18 Concept not only heralds the imminence of a new model powered by this huge 1.8-liter twin-cylinder engine. It also shows just how far Béhème can go in terms of styling. The result is a bobber with pure lines, non-existent artifice, Spartan comfort and formidable depth.
The engine bursts onto the screen, bombards the eye and explodes as much as it exposes itself in the frame. With such a displacement, it will be the manufacturer's biggest sedan. Not built for power, but for America, where volume is king. As a concept, it can afford a few eccentricities that modernism and mass production would not allow. Like these two Solex carburetors, similar to those on the BMW 2002 (a 1968 car). A custom to take on Fat Boy, Breakout and Chief would be an excellent recipient.
The timeless lines are inspired by the 1936 R5. The latter had a rigid frame; the R18 also appears to be built with a one-piece frame, but on closer inspection, the rear structure is articulated and anchored to a shock absorber stashed under the seat - as on the Triumph Bobber and Speedmaster, as well as Harley's new Softail frame. There is one major difference, however: the frame is made of titanium, not steel.
The Bavarian manufacturer unveiled this R18 at the Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance. Like other creations such as the Concept 101 (which gave rise to the K 1600 B), the 9Cento (from which the F 850 RS should emerge) or the Ninety (the beginnings of the NineT Racer). This expression should therefore have a most resounding sequel. Perhaps even a new family, and not just one model.

I've just given up a K100RS that I've owned for over thirty years, too high and too heavy for my eighty years.
I've opted for a Sportster 1200, which is great!
And this morning, my daughter phoned me to ask me to go and discover "The Beast".
All the best.
