presentation of the 1811 CHIEFTAIN 2019
Once taken over by Polaris, Indian slowly rebuilt its identity and range. First a huge engine, then a Chief and a Chieftain to mark out the terrain in 2014. Soon came the Roadmaster and another mill for the 1133 Scout. And everything expanded.
One evolution followed another, even accelerated. But the design has remained almost unchanged for half a decade. Now it's time for the Chieftain to get a facelift.
and not only that. Like some of our other products, change was beginning to push discreetly away from local classicism. A large wheel, combined with a front mudguard more 'custom' than 'Indian', began the pruning of spirits. 2019 loosens the reins. It's not a new Chieftain, but almost a new identity with its frankly revised silhouette.
The forkhead takes the lion's share. Abandoning its Streamliner look, it's slimmer, sharper, lighter, more aggressive in its approach and more streamlined in its technical appearance. Farewell to the additional headlamps, large indicators and chrome bulwark. The spirit of the machine almost changes. It's a pity that this new design brings it so much closer to a.... Harley Street Glide.
The seat is now designed with a Rogue saddle, while the stern loses its beautiful round hips for more conformist-style suitcases. With all this, the Chieftain changes person, but not personality. The Chieftain's mission is further reinforced by an engine that's sure to surprise regular customers.

"- What's that?
- What's that? It's a shifter. You can shift gears faster without touching the clutch.
- Oh yeah (don't care). What's this?
- Well, a slider. To avoid destroying the ball joint and the leather when you angle the gear.
- Oh, yeah? What about this?
- Where did you come from, cezig... ?!? This is for changing driving modes, and allowing your engine to modify the way it handles power."
bingo!!! It clicked. A pot of neurons later, the 1811 cm3 twin-cylinder gets the additional content that goes with it. And the Indians are now equipped with three injection maps.
- Tower, for progressive acceleration and optimum ride smoothness.
- Standard, for responsive throttle response and balanced, progressive power delivery.
- Sport, invigorated by instant throttle response and more muscular power delivery for even more pronounced acceleration.
Shall we stop there? No, it's time to make a real impact. A function cuts off the rear cylinder when the motorcycle is at a standstill (at a red light, for example). Some cars have this system to save fuel when the thruster is under little load. For the Indian, the aim is to limit heat emission towards the rider, thus offering a little more comfort. Although enhanced by technology, the block remains as appealing as ever, boasting elegance and presence. This block is seductive even before you set off.
the Chieftain has a locomotive front end, two luggage compartments and all the equipment needed for long hours on the road. On board you'll find the 'Ride Command' infotainment console, ABS, cruise control, electrically adjustable windscreen, keyless start, remote-lockable luggage, a a 12V socket, tire pressure display, 100W of sound, a dynamic equalizer that automatically adjusts to road, wind and engine noise, 2 cargo bays and plenty of horizon.
