presentation of the 390 Adventure R 2025

Faced with the huge Super Adventure models and seeking a little more sunshine in the shadow of the 890, the 390 Adventure SW was able to defend itself with a jovial, playful engine, complemented by a compact, gentle trail silhouette.
But now KTM has let it soak in a big tub of testosterone, with intravenous images of Dakar, to make it a much more expressive machine.

The new 390 Adventure R turns a new page. Gone are the days of the little grasshopper in the bush. Make way for a rally-raid offspring! Its enduro front mudguard, 1390 Super Adv-inspired headlamp, wraparound shoulders and, above all, large windscreen herald a whole new look and a whole new set of prerogatives. A real teenager who thinks she's Nicolas Hulot.

The need for a breath of fresh air

With its high-mounted 5" color TFT screen, large hand guards, engine cowling and Mitas Enduro Trail E07+ tires in 21" and 18" sizes, it looks ready to camp on the edge of the desert. Its WP Apex suspension is ready to take on any rough terrain. The 43mm upside-down forks allow you to adjust compression and rebound, while the rear shock absorber offers adjustable preload and rebound. As an adventurous rider ready to take on complicated trails, the Katoche has 272 mm of ground clearance (more than an 890 Aventure R), thanks in large part to 230 mm of suspension travel, front and rear. Advantage: crossing possibilities are there / Problem: it takes the seat to 870 mm high.

Compared to the previous 390 Adventure SW, the newcomer has a very different frame. It's common to virtually the entire 390 family(Duke, SMC R, Enduro R), but stands out with a different steering angle and stiffness profile, more suited to off-road riding. Its aluminum swingarm is also shared with the supermotard and enduro models. As are the brakes. Bybre, with a 2-piston front caliper biting 320 mm. The rear relies on its single piston to calm the 240 mm disc.

The engine also features a single piston. This LC4c didn't wait for the Adventure to revamp its innards. The Duke led the way with its 45 horsepower, motivated since 2024 by a new cylinder head and optimized gearbox. In the dust-toothed trail bike, it's positioned to improve ground clearance. As a result, the airbox changes shape.

KTM 390 Adventure R

Small heart, big ego

Distributed torque reaches 4.1 mkg. This is in keeping with the engine's displacement, and may prove amusing, even a little teasing, but not enough to uproot a sleeping mystery boar on its side. However, the 390 Adventure R feels that a good dose of electronics should be there to supervise it; like everything else on the bike, in fact. But that doesn 't mean you can't blow up a few guardrails to give off-roading its rightful place. That's why Cornering ABS has an Offroad mode, to give the rear wheel a break. Other road companions include three riding modes (Street / Rain / Offroad), a shifter, angle-sensitive traction control, and smartphone connectivity to manage calls, music and turn-by-turn navigation.

You'll be able to test it for quite a while: The fuel tank holds 14.5 liters of fuel. The manufacturer claims a range of 400 km. Enough to get you through many a stage in the pampas.
On the other hand, for a 400, the Adventure R isn't exactly light. 165 kilos on the scales, before refueling. To which must be added a good 10 kilos of benzine. That's still more than adequate for a machine in the expedition segment, clods of earth and potatoes by the fire, but... There's still a lot of weight.
And the price. Admittedly, the machine comes with a substantial array of equipment and interesting capacities. But with a cheque for almost 8,000 euros, customers will have to be motivated.

The little Adventure is also thinking of enthusiasts of more on-road models. That's why it's available in an X version, with stick wheels, less advanced suspension, less electronics and a lighter price tag.

French Model 2025
I'm coming back to KTM after the "disappointing" announcement of the KLE500 (the ground clearance alone is not good enough...). I had tried the 450MT which, even if it's a nice bike, I wasn't a big fan of the engine, nor of the throttle feel.
On the other hand, I tried out the Himalayan 450 twice (once when it first came out, and a second time just after my 450MT test ride for comparison) and was blown away by the smoothness of the engine and ride-by-wire grip (and yet, I'm not a fan of single-cylinder bikes in the first place). And as for everything else, I was better off on the Royal Enfield than the CFMoto. It's only now that things are coming to a standstill, as the 390 Adventure R seems to be a pretty good bike (I know it has a few shortcomings, such as the kickstand that makes the bike stall off-road, the throttle that isn't ultra "supple", or the vibrations that are a little too present at times), and the few concerns seem to have already been taken into account by KTM for future models on the market.
On the other hand, I've called all the KTM garages around me and, unfortunately, none of them has a test model... I'd even have agreed to try out the 390 Enduro R, at least to see if I like the engine or not. But nothing, no demo bikes, as soon as they arrive, they're already sold out because they've been reserved for a long time... I'll have to wait until the end of the year/beginning of next year (according to the garages) before I can make up my mind.

7900€ for a 165 kg dry 390 made in India by Bajaj. In other words, it costs at least 800€ too much, weighs at least 15 kg too much, and is just a little mono. It's hard to swallow to be offered such a bike for this price, and in farm-machine colors to boot. 9 years ago, Andy Scutt, an Englishman, built himself a 250 CRFL-based trail bike with a CB500 engine, weighing less than 145 kg with 50 hp, all made with parts from Honda's spare parts catalog, and put in 48,000 km without a hitch. No factory to make the equivalent? Rating : 3/5

As far as I'm concerned, I ride a 2021 390 Adventure. I have to say that I'm amazed by this bike: the engine is full of energy, even at low revs, and the chassis is impressive, with excellent roadholding. Reasonable fuel consumption. In short, many qualities. So I decided to put it up for sale and buy the 2025 R version. In my opinion, the price is now in line with the quality of this bike, and I can't see many competitors in this displacement range. Rating : 4/5

jluisia everyone has their own criteria, if the Katoche suits you so much the better. Personally, I find a 400 mono weighing 165 kg dry to be obese, that's 18 kg more than my 1997 Suzuki DR 650 DE for similar power. My modified Honda 400 XRR "raid" (21-liter fuel tanks, 440cc kit, etc.) weighed 132 kg dry, including luggage rack and soft saddlebags, for 38 hp at the rear wheel. That was 25 years ago... the twin-cylinder CFMoto 450 MT weighs barely 10 kg more and vibrates very little, whereas the vibrations of the KTM are the general lament in India.
In New Delhi, the 390 Aventure 2025 cost €4,700 incl. VAT at a dealer before the new tax on motorcycles over 300cc, which shows that the cost of manufacture is well below €3,000. It's too expensive in France, and for €8,000 you can find much better. Happy riding!

I also had a Suzuki DR 650, which I really liked. Particularly the engine, with its long reach. However, the design was old and the chassis was nothing like my KTM 390. The front forks dipped when braking hard, and the handling was far less precise. Now, weight isn't necessarily a handicap if it's well distributed. I had a CRF 250 that was heavier to move than my KTM, yet 20 kg lighter! As for vibrations, a single-cylinder bike vibrates more than a twin. I was tempted by the CF 450, but it's not imported where I live. Rating : 4/5
