La Piega is the fruit of one man's passion: Roberto Ziletti. A wealthy Italian entrepreneur who decided to take over the work created by Giuseppe Boselli, the founder of Mondial. Count Boselli had the opportunity to make friends with Soïchiro Honda in the 1950s... The winged brand was not ungrateful, and gave the Italian manufacturer the benefit of its SP-1 twin technology to power the Piega. Before getting to the heart of the matter, let's take a look at this new sports car. The design is inspired by famous Italian references, led by Bimota and Ducati. The overall look is pleasing, but doesn't leave the same impression on the retina as a Ducati 996 or Yamaha R1. The Piega's exterior features a chrome vanadium trellis frame, Paioli upside-down forks, Öhlins shock absorbers, special titanium mufflers and gold-series Brembo brakes. You can already see why the price is so excellent. It's worth pointing out that this Mondial will be produced in small annual quantities, in a virtually artisanal fashion. Presented in questionable weather conditions, both driver and machine are reluctant to take to the track.

Once on board, we're immediately put in the picture. This is sport and nothing else. Don't expect to take it out for a stroll through the undergrowth. Radical driving position, all on the arms... a Japanese hypersport seems like a GT by comparison. Handicapped by poorly tuned suspension, the Piega nonetheless displays prodigious liveliness. The brakes were equally impressive on the soaking wet test track, offering plenty of power but with the right feel to avoid going haywire. The twin is specifically mapped, and gains watts but lacks extension above 8,000 rpm. Injection needs fine-tuning, as it causes too many jerks, which tend to throw the bike off balance. Not really at ease and still suffering from a number of minor flaws, the 1000 Piega nevertheless seems to have great potential. In any case, its owner believes in it, and doesn't deny it anything.
