presentation of the F4 1000 R Corsa Corta 2012
when MV-Agusta developed the F4 1000 RR Corsa Corta, was the unstated aim to develop the world's most powerful sports bike, slapping the Japanese in the face on their own turf? To a certain extent, yes, but with the added refinement and nobility of Italian exclusivity: beautiful, racy and very expensive.
But MV's policy has changed recently, and in the image of the Brutale 920 and 1090 R, the factory wants its products to become more accessible, even if this means losing certain high-pedigree components.
this new F4, closely derived from the RR, is torn between two philosophies: sporty to the extreme and appealing to a wide range of enthusiasts. It has chosen to reconcile the two, while sacrificing a few slices of prestige. So, no Öhlins suspension, no adjustable column angle (it's fixed at 23.5°) or ultra-light wheels - by losing an R, it also loses top gear. Is it really serious? You be the judge, knowing that the chassis retains all the essentials and is a match for many of its rivals. Few can boast an inverted fork 50 mm in diameter, Brembo monobloc brake calipers, a swingarm weighing just 5 kilos, a very rigid tubular steel trellis frame, and a silhouette that's enough to give you a stiff neck.
when it comes to powertrains, this R means that new people have been added to the stable. The Corsa Corta (short-stroke) 4-cylinder engine is the same as that used in the F4 RR. The block has been extensively reworked in relation to the base F4, and features more super-square internal ribs. With a bore increased to 79 mm and a stroke reduced to 50.9 mm, the result is a boiler that has dynamite in the combustion chambers, while still allowing a reasonable linear piston speed. With 9 more horsepower than the F4, it allows the diva to join the trio of the most powerful hypersports by announcing over 195 hp at 13,000 rpm. Enough to take on the BMW S 1000 RR and tickle the Kawasaki ZX-10R... and to die laughing when reading the R1 and CBR 1000 datasheets. The innards and equipment are flattering: variable intake, anti-drift system, traction control and two handlebar-selectable engine maps. But as a respectful sibling of the one that gave it so much, the R returns 6 horsepower and 400 rpm to the RR. Prestige oblige.
powerful but not inaccessible, the F4 1000 R is positioned right between the sporty F4 (which it replaces in the catalog) and the extreme F4 RR. Priced only slightly higher than the standard version, with an engine designed to bellow and spit all it's got into the revs, its timeless silhouette and sharp chassis, it's destined for a spirited sport, very close to violence. The Varese factory even went so far as to fit it with a passenger, as if the latter could imagine for a single second that he or she would be welcome aboard...
