Just hearing those words instantly gives you goosebumps, brings to mind black-and-white images of the TT, and stirs a passion for sports and racing enthusiasts. The English bike (and its famous single-cylinder engine) is the motorcycle with the longest racing history. A legend that has played a major role in shaping Norton’s reputation.

A powerhouse in understated packaging

Who decided to revive this name for its new… roadster? An “hyper-roadster,” even, because the 21st-century Manx is a real firecracker. The bike is directly derived from the hypersport model that appeared just as recently: the Manx R. You could even say that one is the stripped-down version of the other. Those connecting rods are hot! The fire is raging inside.

This 1200 Manx follows in the footsteps of the V4 CR, the streetfighter from the “Stuart Garner” era of Norton (a rather nebulous and turbulent time). But what a shock! No transition, no evolution—it’s an entirely new chapter. Just like the R, this machine opts for a streamlined, smooth, taut design, exuding a very conventional, clean personality—almost to the point of being placid. The British flair is missing, as is that sense of exceptionality. A Triumph 1200 Speed Triple RS exudes far more charisma. But the Norton stands its ground, boasting top-tier build quality and craftsmanship, and relies on much more than just its silhouette.

A Norton must be powerful, noble, and impressive. To achieve this, nothing beats a V4. Mounted in an aluminum perimeter frame, the British engine produces 206 chevaux from its 1,200 cm³. That’s less power than a pure hypersport bike, but still a hefty amount of power in absolute terms, complemented by a generous 13.3 mkg of torque. Right off the bat, the Manx is ready to take on the BMW M 1000 R and Ducati 1100 Streetfighter.
What’s more, it isn’t afraid to take a few knocks and dish them out in return. With its finely tuned chassis—a large DLC-coated Marzocchi inverted fork, Brembo Hypure brake calipers, large 330-mm front rotors, a single-sided swingarm, Pirelli Supercorsa V4SP tires—this high-class hooligan is just waiting to carve up the track.

More Than Just a Heritage Name

There’s no way we’re leaving it alone with all its weapons (and coat of arms). The bike will be packed with electronics, including active suspension (likely optional), 5 riding modes, traction, slide, and wheelie controls, engine brake management, cornering ABS, linked braking, a shifter, a launch control system, an angle-sensitive cruise control, and a hill-start assist.
The interface between the rider and the bike is extensive: an 8-inch color TFT screen with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, smartphone pairing, and turn-by-turn navigation. Finally, to awaken Ms. Hyde (where is her mentor, Jekyll?), the Norton simply “senses” the key and starts up without her even having to take it out of her pocket.

The Norton 1200 Manx should, like the R, be available in several trim levels. Enough to keep things classy or indulge in treats like carbon-fiber wheels or fairings, a more spirited exhaust, titanium parts, and more.
Although “bold” in style, this roadster has more than that to make it stand out. It reinvents the Norton philosophy and offers its own take on refinement.
