Now that Norton is under the TVS umbrella, two directions are taking shape: on the one hand, the sporty top-of-the-range Manx and Manx R; on the other, the buoyant and essential trail segment. To this end, the English brand has taken up the challenge with theAtlas. The machine doesn't go unnoticed, with surprises that raise questions.

Atlas is a well-known name at Norton. Two 650 trails were planned a few years ago, the Nomad and the Ranger, to expand the manufacturer's range - we've never seen anything more than photos. But theAtlas was originallya 750 sports bike from the '60s, with a shaky fate that led to a legendary offspring: the Commando.

Let's change registers to face this new dimension for the English (and Indian) manufacturer. No one expected it to have such an unassuming design. Its trail bike features smooth, blandly arranged surfaces. The design seems stifled by a lack of personality, with an air halfway between an old 650 Transalp and a Phelon & Moore Capetown. From the outset, a feeling emerges that it must not be violent in the belly.

The first Atlas from 1962 could make you dream with its big 745 cm3 twin (big engine at the time). The 2026 model doesn't have the same sense of noble pedigree. From a name as prestigious as Norton, one would have imagined a toned-down but still muscular version of the 1200 V4.

Not so! Instead, the appetite is whetted in the medium-displacement category, with a 585 cm3 twin. Cold shower! The Norton Atlas won't be challenging the Multistrada V4 or the S 1000 XR; instead, it will be hunting on the lands of the QJ Motor SRT 600 SX, Moto-Morini X-Cape 700 or Voge DS 625 X.

Is a road trail bike of this calibre worthy of Norton?

Its engine is unprecedented, and in no way derived from a TVS mill. The press release doesn't specify any power or weight figures, or give any idea of the machine's capabilities. However, we can imagine around sixty horsepower coming out of this 270° block. Like all engines in this displacement bracket, it's a liquid-cooled, parallel-twin. A reasonable power output and a size far removed from the monsters of the sector will appeal to a wider clientele. Especially as it is announced as being available in A2

In engine terms, the Atlas doesn't quite live up to the reputation of its ancestor. However, this crossover aims to be top-of-the-range, if not untouchable in its class. It's as loaded with equipment as a big trail-GT, and its comfort and electronics modules will make your head spin:

• Three riding modes
• Traction, glide and wheeling controls
• Cruise control
• Shifter
• Hill-start assist
• Launch Control
• 8-inch TFT color display
• USB-C port
• Adaptive cornering light

Enough to make it a standard-bearer in the category. But with all this, the price is likely to be much less democratic than the brand claims. And then again, you really do need circuit-typical electronic aids on a 600 trail bike ??????

A chassis to get the job done

When you first look at the Atlas's silhouette, the idea of large aluminum spars immediately comes to mind. But a closer look underneath reveals a tubular steel trellis. Norton fitted KYB suspension and Bybre brakes to build up its dynamics. To show a slightly adventurous side, the wheels are spoked, measure 19 and 17 inches and are shod with block tires.

The Norton Atlas is Norton's latest addition to the big trail kettle, with eye-catching features and surprising mechanical modesty. English charm has been eclipsed in favor of an identity for a new era. It's a daring and delicate gamble... (and one that, in my opinion, borders on the daredevil).

The Atlas will also be offered in a GT version, with stick wheels and sportier tires.
