presentation of the 821 Monster 2018

"E un Mostro!". According to the Ducati Museum's history, this is how a worker expressed his vision of a new roadster, spotted in the Borgo Panigale workshops. That was 25 years ago, and just a short time later, the Monster 900 captured the emotions of a host of motorcyclists. So many variations have come and gone, and the Monster 821 is the one that best carries the banner today. The 797 lets you discover; the 1200s are for the furious. This average 821 is the most homogeneous, combining a fine dose of valour and design. It's now evolving, doing what's necessary to improve the details that may have been lacking.

ducati cultivates the image of this emblematic bike, always striving to link it to the first in the line. The spirit remains, even if many things have changed. Especially in the belly. But the Monster remains seductive, compact, villainous and envied. From the previous chapter to this one, the visual differences are present but not obvious. The manufacturer plays it safe here, highlighting what will appeal to enthusiasts.
The line is instantly recognizable, while hints of the Monster 1200 R can be seen here and there. In the shape of the exhausts and rear hull. The stern expresses even more strength.
The Monster 821 II gains a new fuel tank, one liter smaller. The speedometer is raised to a higher level, and, like its more upscale siblings, features a TFT matrix for an attractive full-color display - including a gear indicator and fuel gauge. The headlight, round as it should be, is entirely LED. On the frame side, the minimalist tubular trellis remains unchanged, anchored to the engine to take advantage of its rigidity. At the rear, things are different. The large plates where all the footrests used to rest have disappeared. The driver's controls are now anchored on smaller plates, while the passenger's controls are mounted on a new rear frame. Enthusiasts will continue their investigations on the side of the plastic covers, noting the new shape of the element overhanging the tubing escaping from the rear cylinder and the smaller cover in the twin opening.

Ducati 821 Monster 2018

A Monster is more about living than riding. The engine promises to be healthy and lively. Apart from the digestion of its breath through modified exhausts, nothing changes inside. Except for the torque, which loses a tenth of a mkg. Everyone will find at their disposal the same force as yesterday, namely 109 horsepower (112 on theold 821 but measured under different conditions) distributed by a desmodromic two-cylinder, 8-valve powertrain and a few liters of coolant. Torque remains at a more than adequate 8.8 mkg.
Power is transmitted via a 6-speed gearbox, which can now be backed up by an optional Up&Down shifter. From the throttle to the final rendering, the electronics package has been renewed. The 3-stage ABS, 8-setting traction control and 3 riding modes (Urban, Touring and Sport) are all present and active.

the Ducati Monster 821 will change mood via its Riding Modes; the rider will entrust the rigor of roadholding to the chassis. Alas, still no monobars for the mid-Monster. Instead, Kayaba suspension components are used for the 43 mm inverted fork, and Sachs for the monoshock. Braking comes from Brembo, with M4.32 4-piston calipers for 320 mm front discs. There's a 245 mm disc and two-piston caliper at the rear. Serious stuff, for peace of mind during heavy deceleration.

the Monster 821 has spent a few evenings with the 1200s, and it shows. It's matured, it's become aware that it can demand more, and assert its status as a more present ball princess. She's gained a kilo in bringues and lost a flicker of torque. Too little to make any difference to driving. Today, here's a polished Monster that will deliver just as much pleasure with more skilful forms.
