evolution is merciless. The reign of the dream-inspiring 748/916 tandem is coming to an end. Objects of desire and fantasy for the average person, or demanding sportswomen with a temperament for pro drivers like leeks, the divas are disappearing in favor of their descendants. A change of aesthetic and other upheavals for the 749/999 duo. The 748 was a clone of the 916, while the 749 continues the tradition, adopting the chassis and refinements of its big sister, the 999. Only the engine has changed, but it benefits from the famous Testatretta cylinder head and new engine dimensions. To the eye, apart from the sticker on the fairing and the 1 cm narrower tire, it's impossible to tell the difference between a 749 and a 999. All in all, it's looking good. Let's take a closer look at the beast: The same tubular trellis frame as the 999, inverted fork, Sachs rear shock absorber, Brembo gold-series brakes, adjustable steering column angle... The S version takes refinement to the extreme, with adjustable footrests and seat-tank assembly. Just reading the specification sheet is enough to make you think you're Bayliss. And, like the 999 compared to the 998, the 749 changes the face of Ducati's ultra-sports bikes: the old one required a lot of grip to turn, the new one is easier to ride, still combining rigor, stability and precision, but the machine feels much lighter to place than the previous generation. The twin makes the most of this incisive behavior. You can put the sauce back on without fear when exiting a bend, as the 749 stays on course, guided to perfection by its highly precise front end. The 748 's engine was known to be particularly temperamental: hollow before 7,000 rpm, then brutal above that. The newcomer is appreciated in a different way: supple and willing from 5,000 rpm, it pushes forward very gradually, with power and rage, until 10,000 rpm - the shifter cuts out at 11,000 rpm, but you'll have already shifted into the next gear. Although it performs exceptionally well on the racetrack, the Italian diva still lacks the watts of its 4-cylinder rivals - although the twin is much more pleasant.

as usual, the price hurts, and is higher than the Japanese 1000. No matter: the 749 is a pleasure to drive - so Latin and so exhilarating - even more so than the 999, which is less demanding. The chassis is highly commendable, and the equipment helps digest the muscular price tag. Today, as in the past, a Ducati remains marginal and must be earned - although riding the machines from Bologna is becoming more "accessible", the pleasure remains intact. To give it more taste and potential, Ducati took advantage of 2005 to increase engine power by 5hp. The twin now produces 108 hp. Torque has also been increased, to a maximum of 8.2 mkg. Like the 999, the 749 also gets a new look for its forkhead, which gets rid of its upper air vents for a more streamlined appearance. The machine itself undergoes a draconian diet, losing 9 kg.

a Dark version has been available since 2004. The finish is less polished, but reduces the price by €1,340. The appearance is a little less flattering, but the essentials are preserved.

At the age of 55... After a few dozen motorcycles, from the German with the radio, to the over-vitalized Japanese and a few trail bikes, I couldn't die with dignity without having had a DUCAT'
Thanks to my Mentor Marco from Mareuil (62)
In short, after my VARADERO, I threw myself onto a 749... Damn, I'm 20 years old under the helmet, a noise...a position...sensations..
What a kick!!!
My back hurts, my ass hurts, my wrists hurt..But I'm alive!
I love it!!! I change frames once a year...I'm keeping this one!

On test: the 2005 version of the 749 dark (cheap version).
On start-up, the sound of the bi alone would justify its purchase. Bewitching!!! On the road, I find it less maneuverable than a ZX6R 636 (future ex moto.... excellent that said), but that must be due to lack of practice. On the other hand, it behaves very well and rigorously as soon as you push it a little. It picks up without flinching under 3,000 rpm, and kicks into high gear as soon as you climb a little. Driving pleasure is incomparable, and the sensations you get from riding it are fabulous. For example, I found myself going 120km/h on a country road in second gear without noticing it. It doesn't flinch in the slightest compared with my 636, which screams above 9,000
Now I understand why she only runs with Japanese 600s... a little more Watts would have done her good. In any case, between 8,000 and 10,000
It's a pity it's so exorbitantly priced, but if it were accessible to everyone, would it make us dream so much?
Give it a try... you won't regret it.

A motorcycle in a class of its own... admittedly, you really have to give it more than the Japanese to ride it, but it's a great way to learn how to ride! As for the engine, it's amazing how pleasant a 7.5 twin can be, and how appreciably long it lasts, especially on the track, even if it doesn't climb to the sky like an R6... in fact, I remember comparing these two machines before making my choice... passion won out! Its qualities: precision and stability (let go of the handlebars a little on the freeway to see... even with a rear puncture while riding, it didn't flinch!), equipment quality (rigorous suspension, incredible braking, not radial but the Brembo beats the radial systems fitted to its rivals!) and its looks! Pleasant on the road, but not really in town (steering, clutch hardness), you have to take it out on the track to realize just how much the chassis makes it go everywhere! The big drawback is really the price and the cost of ownership... but it's great to be original! Rating : 5/5

superb bike! very aggressive look, power increased to 108 hp for the 06-07 model, which fortunately is still free of the French castrating clamp! great! much better than the other cubes whose engines have been cut by around 20 hp! Rating : 5/5

extra bike, much more fun than the 999, it's really very accessible on the track, precise, a bit hard to warm up but a real pleasure, I also have a gsxr 750, which I'm selling with no interest

A jewel... After a few preconceived ideas due to its cubic capacity, I was won over by its ease, precision and potency... with a single stroke of the throttle (and without noticing it), it hits 240 km/h easily (I didn't push it any harder), it's hyper rigorous on the curve (but beware of the torque when going back on the throttle, it quickly kicks in as a warning), and the sound it produces is joussif... to be tried urgently !!!
