presentation of the 996 R 2001
this Ducati doesn't just replace the 996 SPS. It's a shadow of the Superbike machine that a glance at it is enough to revive. The differences between the two machines are few and far between. The equipment is still sumptuous, with Öhlins components everywhere (fork, rear shock absorber and steering damper), a new and surprising Brembo brake system, and carbon in abundance. Fairing, exhaust, monobars, airbox, mudguards (and so on) are all made of this noble material. The most memorable aspect is the engine's upgrade to 998 cm3 and its new dimensions. The Bologna engineers have increased the bore and reduced the piston stroke. Larger, more closely positioned valves, redesigned combustion chambers and ducts, a new electronic control unit... the long list of modifications proves that the engine-makers have not been idle. Heralded as more reliable, the mill gains almost 10% more power. And the whole bike has lost no less than 7 kilos since the SPS.
To recognize this 996 R, only the discerning eye will notice the disappearance of the side gills. Getting close to it is already invigorating - just imagine how it feels to hold it. You're not straddling a motorcycle, but a jewel crowned with victories. From the Superbike to the 996 R, the only difference is the blinkers and the number plate. That's the magic of Ducati: to bring the spirit and taste of competition to its production machines. Once you've settled into the machine, you can expect great physical and emotional moments. Discomfort reigns, the position is testing... Quick, elbow grease. When it comes to attacking (which is what it was born to do), you need to get it into the bend with force. Then you can take full advantage of its highly precise and efficient front end. The chassis follows without missing a beat.
A good squeeze of the throttle and the twin gives without restraint. After 6,000 rpm, the engine kicks into high gear. The machine is catapulted into an overpowering effort that is only calmed by the ignition switch - and you reach it fast!
The Brembo brakes are remarkably powerful, but above all, there's no longer any need for hydraulic cylinders in place of the right hand. Feeling, efficiency, dexterity... Purists rest assured: you still need a good grip on the clutch.
By becoming an R, the 996 evolves and gains on all fronts. It remains an unreasonable, uncomfortable, rigorous and demanding machine, available in 350 examples only. Passion and pleasure sweep all that away in a flick of the wrist. It's one of those rare machines that can drive men mad.
