Brembo, founded in Italy in 1961 by Emilio Bombassei, is today one of the world's leading designers and manufacturers of high-performance braking systems. Based in Curno, near Bergamo, the company initially specialized in brake discs before developing complete solutions for cars, motorcycles and industrial vehicles.
In the 1970s, Brembo made a name for itself by becoming Ferrari's official Formula 1 supplier. This prestigious partnership marked the beginning of Brembo's involvement in top-level motorsports, notably in MotoGP, Superbike and endurance racing. Technological innovations such as aluminum monobloc calipers and carbon-ceramic discs made Brembo an essential reference for manufacturers and racing teams.
In the 1990s, Brembo made what it describes as a "bold" choice, adopting bright red for its brake calipers. A way of visually setting itself apart from the competition before offering a wider range of colors and designs.
In addition to the competition, Brembo has established itself as the preferred choice of major car and motorcycle brands such as Porsche, BMW, Ducati and Harley-Davidson. Brembo's expertise in transferring racing technology to consumer applications enables it to offer braking systems renowned for their power, reliability and durability.
In 2024, Brembo further strengthens its strategic position by announcing the acquisition of Öhlins Racing, the renowned Swedish manufacturer of high-end suspensions. This operation, the largest in the company's history, is part of a drive to diversify and create synergy between braking and suspension. It follows other major acquisitions, such as SBS Friction in Denmark and J.Juan in Spain, enabling Brembo to extend its expertise to complete vehicle dynamics control systems.
Today, Brembo is present in more than 70 countries and has production sites all over the world, notably in Italy, China, the United States and Brazil. With a strategy focused on innovation, the company is investing heavily in regenerative braking technologies and electronic braking systems to meet the demands of tomorrow's mobility. Its partnership with Michelin, focused on AI (artificial intelligence) and tested on four-wheeled vehicles, holds great promise for our two-wheelers.
